The Assessment Process

1. INTAKE & BOOKING

By Telephone or Email

2. INITIAL PARENT AND CHILD INTERVIEW

History is collected regarding the parent’s pregnancy, birthing, early development, medical history, schooling background, social history, general behaviour, and a game plan for follow-on sessions and assessment or referral to other practitioners is made.  A parent session is held followed by a child initial session where siblings are invited if age appropriate.

3. CLINICAL ASSESSMENT SESSIONS

Your child will be assessed using several assessment tools.  The number and length of the assessment sessions will depend on the purpose of the assessment and required test batteries.  The assessment will identify core issues of any cognitive, learning, social, emotional or behavioural issues.  Testing can occur in paper form or digital format.

4. FEEDBACK SESSION

In this session, the psychologist will discuss assessment results and make recommendations.  You will also be able to ask questions to make sure you are on the right path after the assessment.  A report can be provided to your referrer (GP/Paediatrician) or school and a copy provided to you.

5. PARENT REPORT

Final reports with assessment results, identified needs, strategies for developing both strengths and weaknesses over the short and long term, as well as recommendations for interventions will be included.  Access to our multidisciplinary team is possible should this be appropriate.

6. SCHOOL ADVISORY

Where applicable, written feedback is also provided to the individual’s school, advising them of additional support.

7. FAMILY AND SCHOOL TEAM SUPPORT

Where appropriate and desired, our clinicians are able to meet with the family and/or school to provide a full range of support and intervention strategies.  Home visits and school visits can occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is involved in an assessment?

A child assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to better understand your child's strengths, challenges, learning style, behaviour, and development. The assessment process is tailored to your child's age, presenting concerns, and the questions you are hoping to answer. A typical assessment may include: An initial consultation with parents or caregivers to discuss your child's developmental history, current concerns, and goals. Clinical interviews and behavioural observations. Standardised assessment tools appropriate to your child's needs. Information gathered from parents, teachers, or other professionals (with your consent). Review of relevant school reports, medical history, or previous assessments. A feedback session to explain the results, answer your questions, and discuss recommendations. Depending on the reason for the assessment, this may include evaluating cognitive abilities, learning difficulties, attention, executive functioning, autism, ADHD, emotional wellbeing, behaviour, adaptive functioning, or social and communication skills. Following the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the findings, diagnosis (where applicable), and practical recommendations to support your child at home, school, and in the community. Where appropriate, recommendations may also include therapy, educational supports, or referrals to other services.

How long does the assessment process take?

The length of the assessment process depends on the type of assessment being completed and your child's individual needs. Most assessments are completed over 2 to 4 appointments, although more comprehensive assessments may require additional sessions.

What conditions do you assess for?

We provide comprehensive assessments for a wide range of developmental, learning, behavioural, and mental health concerns in children, adolescents, and adults. Depending on your needs, assessments may include: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Specific Learning Disorders (reading, writing and mathematics) Intellectual Disability Giftedness and cognitive strengths Developmental delays Behavioural and emotional difficulties Anxiety and mood concerns Executive functioning difficulties (planning, organisation, attention and working memory) Adaptive functioning and everyday living skills School readiness and educational concerns Our clinicians use evidence-based, standardised assessment tools and gather information from multiple sources, including parents, teachers, and other professionals where appropriate. The goal is to gain a clear understanding of an individual's strengths and challenges so that practical recommendations and appropriate supports can be put in place.

Is a referral from a GP necessary?

No. You do not need a referral from a GP to book a psychological or educational assessment. You can contact us directly to arrange an appointment. However, a referral may be helpful or required in certain situations, such as: If your child has been referred by a paediatrician, psychiatrist, school, or another health professional. If you are seeking access to funding or rebates through a government program or third-party insurer. If the assessment forms part of ongoing medical or specialist care. Many families choose to self-refer, while others are referred by GPs, paediatricians, psychiatrists, schools, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, or other allied health professionals. If you are unsure which assessment is most appropriate or whether you need a referral, our team is happy to discuss your concerns and guide you to the most suitable assessment pathway.
