Thinkahead provides formal dyscalculia assessments from our Sydney clinics in Frenchs Forest and Meadowbank, supporting children and adults across the region.
Dyscalculia is a neurological condition which affects an individual’s ability to understand mathematical concepts. It can manifest in severe difficulty mastering even basic mathematical concepts, such as the value of numbers and how they relate to each other. This lack of basic number sense can naturally result in an inability to complete calculations and execute basic arithmetic.
Perhaps most easily understood as a condition which shares some of the symptoms of dyslexia — but where dyslexics have issues processing words, those with dyscalculia struggle to process numbers. For example, a child with dyscalculia might read the number ‘320’ as ‘302’. While this can inhibit learning, early diagnosis and treatment can greatly assist dyscalculic children to not just cope with, but thrive alongside their condition.
It is also worth stressing that there is absolutely zero correlation between dyscalculia and general intelligence. Indeed, many highly capable people have this condition. Issues arise when undiagnosed dyscalculics are incorrectly assumed to be academically inept, and cannot access tailored support.
Whether you are an adult who has spent a lifetime avoiding anything that resembles an equation, or the parent of a child who dreads maths class despite their best efforts, getting assessed and diagnosed can be nothing short of life-changing.
For children, a formal diagnosis unlocks access to school accommodations tailored to their needs. This includes NAPLAN provisions, additional time during assessments, and targeted numeracy interventions. Identifying dyscalculia early is key to better educational outcomes and, crucially, protecting a child’s confidence and self-esteem.
For adults, a diagnosis can reframe a lifetime of struggle, finally providing an explanation for difficulties that have been dismissed as “not having a maths brain.” It can also open doors to workplace accommodations, university access plans, and NDIS eligibility.
A dyscalculia assessment at Thinkahead is a collaborative, structured process led by an experienced clinician, designed to build a complete picture of how a person understands and works with numbers.
Initial appointment. For children, the first appointment is usually with the parents, where the clinician gathers a detailed background – pregnancy and birth, early development, schooling history, and any family history of learning difficulties. For adults, we talk through your educational and work history and the specific difficulties you have experienced with numbers, calculation and mathematical reasoning.
Standardised assessment. A separate appointment is arranged with the individual, where a battery of standardised tests is administered. These measure general cognitive ability alongside number sense, calculation, mathematical reasoning and related working-memory skills, using well-validated instruments such as the WISC or WAIS and the WIAT. This pinpoints the core pattern of strengths and difficulties and helps distinguish dyscalculia from other learning differences.
Building a full picture. With your consent, questionnaires and observations are gathered from people who know the individual well – such as parents and school teachers – so we can see how difficulties present across home and school. We also screen for commonly co-occurring conditions so that any recommendations are well matched to the person’s needs.
Feedback session. Once testing is complete and scored, a feedback session is arranged. You receive a clear explanation of the findings, a formal written report, and practical recommendations for next steps – which may include school or workplace accommodations, targeted therapy or learning support, exam and NAPLAN provisions, and eligibility for support such as the NDIS.

Struggling with maths can have many causes – gaps in teaching, low confidence, or anxiety. Dyscalculia is a specific, neurologically based difficulty with understanding numbers and quantity that persists despite good teaching and effort, typically affecting core skills such as number sense, recalling number facts, and calculation. A formal assessment distinguishes dyscalculia from more general maths difficulty by measuring these skills against overall ability.
Dyscalculia can usually be reliably assessed from around 7 years of age, once a child has had enough exposure to formal maths teaching for difficulties to become clear. That said, assessment is valuable at any age – including adulthood – and earlier identification means support can be put in place sooner. If you have concerns about a younger child, our clinicians can advise on the right timing.
No – you do not need a referral to book a dyscalculia assessment at Thinkahead. You can contact our Frenchs Forest or Meadowbank clinics directly. If you would like to claim any rebates that may be available it is worth speaking with your GP, but a referral is not required to get started.
Yes – dyscalculia commonly co-occurs with other conditions such as ADHD, dyslexia and dysgraphia. Because these overlap, our assessment screens for co-occurring difficulties so that the full picture is understood and recommendations address every area, not just maths. Where appropriate, we can advise on further assessment for related conditions.
