Autism Assessment Sydney

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or simply autism, is a neurodevelopmental condition that is estimated to affect around 1 in 120 Australians. Autism can begin presenting in children as young as 12 months, and is typically a lifelong condition. Autistic individuals broadly tend to have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit limited or repetitive interests.

Per the name, ASD exists on a broad spectrum, with traits varying significantly from person to person. Some individuals may be completely nonverbal or have intellectual disabilities, while others may have high-functioning autism and excel academically and professionally.

Autism is a manageable condition and many autistic individuals live happy and fulfilling lives. Early diagnosis and proper professional care are the best way to support affected individuals with daily functioning.

How Might An Autism Assessment Help You?

Since autistic traits often begin displaying early in life, the optimal time to get assessed and diagnosed is in childhood, since early intervention treatments have the most success in improving children’s socialisation and communication skills. This also often leads to better educational outcomes, with autistic children receiving appropriately tailored support.

Regardless of what age someone is assessed for autism, multiple studies have shown that specialised care drastically reduces rates of depression and anxiety, which commonly co-occur in autistic individuals.

Having a better understanding of your condition has a powerful effect in itself. Understanding why your brain functions differently to your peers reduces confusion, enhances self-acceptance, and opens pathways to targeted support and personal growth.

The Assessment Process

At Thinkahead Consultant Psychologists, we understand that seeking an Autism assessment is a significant step. Our assessment process is thorough, respectful, and strengths-based, designed to provide clarity, understanding, and practical recommendations tailored to each individual’s needs.

Our assessments are conducted by experienced psychologists with expertise in neurodevelopmental differences and follow evidence-based diagnostic guidelines, including the DSM-5

Initial Enquiry and Intake

The process begins with an initial enquiry via phone or email. Our intake team will:

  • Discuss your concerns and goals for assessment
  • Confirm referral pathways (private, Medicare, NDIS, or other funding)
  • Identify the most appropriate clinician for the assessment
  • Provide information about the assessment process, timeframes, and costs

Once booked, intake questionnaires and consent forms are sent to gather background information.

Comprehensive Developmental History

A detailed developmental and psychosocial history is a core part of Autism assessment. This typically involves:

  • A structured interview with the individual and/or parents/caregivers
  • Exploration of early developmental milestones, communication, social interaction, play, sensory sensitivities, and behaviour patterns
  • Review of educational, occupational, medical, and mental health history
  • Consideration of strengths, interests, coping strategies, and challenges across settings

For adults, this may include reflective discussion of childhood experiences, compensatory strategies (masking), and current functioning.

Standardised Assessment Measures

We use gold-standard, evidence-based assessment tools as appropriate to the individual’s age and presentation. These may include:

  • Autism-specific observational assessments
  • Standardised questionnaires completed by the individual, parents, teachers, or other informants
  • Measures assessing social communication, restricted and repetitive behaviours, sensory processing, and adaptive functioning

The selection of tools is individualised and culturally sensitive.

Cognitive, Emotional, and Functional Assessment (as required)

To build a comprehensive understanding, the assessment may also include:

  • Cognitive or intellectual assessment
  • Assessment of attention, executive functioning, or learning
  • Screening for co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, or learning differences
  • Evaluation of daily living skills, emotional regulation, and social functioning

This ensures that Autism is considered within the broader context of the person’s overall profile.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration (where appropriate)

Where beneficial, we collaborate with other professionals within our multidisciplinary team, including:

  • Occupational Therapists (sensory and functional assessment)
  • Speech Pathologists (communication and social language skills)
  • Educators or allied health professionals (with consent)

This holistic approach supports accurate diagnosis and meaningful recommendations.

Clinical Formulation and Diagnostic Decision-Making

All assessment information is carefully integrated and reviewed by the assessing psychologist. Diagnosis is based on:

  • DSM-5 diagnostic criteria
  • Clinical observations
  • Standardised assessment results
  • Developmental history and real-world functioning

We recognise the diversity of Autism presentations and take particular care with complex profiles, including females, adults, and individuals with high masking or co-occurring conditions.

Feedback Session

A dedicated feedback session is provided to:

  • Explain the assessment findings in clear, supportive language
  • Discuss whether diagnostic criteria for Autism are met
  • Explore strengths, challenges, and individual differences
  • Answer questions and provide emotional support

This session is collaborative and paced to ensure understanding.

Comprehensive Written Report

You will receive a detailed, easy-to-read report that includes:

  • Background and assessment overview
  • Assessment results and diagnostic conclusions
  • Individual strengths and support needs
  • Practical, tailored recommendations for home, school, work, and community settings
  • Guidance for NDIS, educational adjustments, or workplace accommodations (if relevant)

Reports are suitable for use with schools, funding bodies, and other professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the early signs of autism?

Autism presents differently in each individual, but common early signs can include:

  • Social communication differences: Limited eye contact, reduced response to name, difficulty understanding social cues, challenges with back-and-forth conversation.
  • Restricted or repetitive behaviours: Repetitive movements (e.g., hand-flapping), strict routines, strong preference for sameness, or intense focus on specific interests.
  • Sensory sensitivities: Over- or under-reacting to sounds, lights, textures, or smells.
  • Delayed or unusual language development: Late speech, unusual tone or rhythm, or challenges with understanding and using language socially.
  • Play differences: Preference for solitary play, repetitive play patterns, or difficulty with imaginative or pretend play.

It’s important to note that signs vary widely, and strengths and abilities often coexist with challenges. Early identification helps with timely support and positive outcomes.

What criteria are used for the diagnosis?

Autism diagnosis at Thinkahead follows the DSM-5-TR criteria, which include:

  • Persistent difficulties in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts (e.g., difficulties with conversation, non-verbal communication, relationships).
  • Restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities, which may include:
  • Repetitive movements or speech
  • Strict routines or rituals
  • Highly focused interests
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Symptoms must present in early development, even if they become more noticeable later.
  • Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

These difficulties are not better explained by another condition.

Do I need a referral for an Autism assessment?

At Thinkahead a referral is not necessary and parents can self refer if they would like their child to be assessed for Autism. A referral from a GP, paediatrician or school can be helpful but is not required.

For adult assessments, you can self refer directly for an assessment.

Referrals may be required by some funding sources (e.g., Medicare or NDIS), depending on your situation.

Can I claim rebates for the assessment?

You may be eligible for rebates depending on your circumstances:

  • Medicare: Rebate available under a GP or paediatric referral for a psychological assessment (often via a Mental Health Care Plan).
  • Private Health Insurance: Rebates may apply depending on your cover.
  • NDIS: Autism assessments may be funded for NDIS eligibility determination.

Our team can guide you through options and assist with paperwork to ensure you can access available rebates.
